چکیده

It has been more than 40 years since Blalock (1964) noted the distinction between what he called “cause” (formative) and “effect” (reflective) indicators of latent variables, and three decades since the academic literature recognized that some SEM measurement models don’t fit classical test theory’s assumptions about the direction of causality of the relationships between constructs and their indicators (Bagozzi 1981; Fornell and Bookstein 1982). Since that time, interest in modeling constructs with formative indicators has significantly increased in the business, social science, and information systems literatures (e.g., Bollen 2007; Cenfetelli and Bassellier 2009; Diamantopoulos and Papadopoulos 2010; Diamantopoulos et al. 2008; Diamantopoulos and Winklhofer 2001; Edwards and Bagozzi, 2000; Jarvis et. al. 2003; Law and Wong 1999; MacKenzie et al. 2005; Marakas et al. 2007; Petter et al. 2007), and an increasing number of academic studies are incorporating these types of measurement models in their substantive investigations. However, recently researchers in a variety of disciplines (Franke et al. 2008; Howell et al. 2007; Kim et al. 2010) have raised questions surrounding the correct conceptualization and operationalization of formative indicator measurement models. 1

The Critical Importance of Construct Measurement Specification: A Response to Aguirre-Urreta and Marakas

Aguirre-Urreta and Marakas (A&M) suggest in their simulation “Revisiting Bias Due to Construct Misspecification: Different Results from Considering Coefficients in Standardized Form,” that, like Jarvis et al. (2003), MacKenzie et al. (2005), and Petter et al. (2007) before them, bias does occur when formative constructs are misspecified as reflective. But A&M argue that the level of bias in pri...

A Deeper Look at Technology Adoption: Moderation and Technology Selection

This study proposes a model of factors that may be driving previously observed gender differences in acceptance decisionmaking. In particular, a significant effect is found for generalized computer self-efficacy, over and above that of psychological gender role identified in prior related research. However, this study departs from prior work in technology adoption by employing actual choice bet...

Revisiting Bias Due to Construct Misspecification: Different Results from Considering Coefficients in Standardized Form

We illustrate the importance of this issue with a simple example. Following the conventions set by Wright (1934), all models depicted in this research show causal influence by unidirectional arrows from cause to effect, and relationships not analyzed in causal terms (correlations, covariances) by curved two-headed arrows. From the population model shown in Figure A1, we generated one dataset wi...

Requirements Elicitation Technique Selection: A Theory-Based Contingency Model

Requirements elicitation has been recognized as a critical stage in system development projects, yet current models prescribing particular elicitation techniques are still limited in their development and application. This research reviews efforts aimed at addressing this, and synthesizes a common structure consisting of project contingencies, elicitation techniques, logic of fit, and a success...
